This is a fascinating story…

Even though this is not about the Philippines, I thought that anyone who is interested in Scuba diving would be interested in this.

Introduced to life under the sea in high school through snorkelling, Yoji Ookata obtained his scuba license at the age of 21. At the same time, he went out and bought a brand new NIKONOS, a 35mm film camera specifically designed for underwater photography. He devoted all his spare time – aside from his day job – to perfecting his art of underwater photography. Then, at age 39, he finally made the transition. He quit his office job and became a freelance underwater photographer.  But even for a man who spent the last 50 years immersed in the underwater world of sea life, the ocean proved infinitely mysterious. While diving in the semi-tropical region of Amami Oshima, roughly 80 ft below sea level, Ookata spotted something he had never seen. And as it turned out, no one else had seen it before either.  Continue reading

Sarah does 50 dives!

The Averett family has been enjoying their diving in this part of the planet for a change. It’s been great to have Mark, Janell, and Sarah with us this past week. Sarah earned herself and very special t-shirt by doing her 50th dive here…Congratulations!

Divemasters in training

Malcolm Hammer and Mark Connell have been working hard over the last couple of weeks towards there Divemaster certification. Both have completed Rescue/ EFR, Deep Specialty and Nitrox and are well on their way through the Divemaster course work. Better look out for a humdinger of a party when they’re finished!

Farewell Klein Scuba

Klein Scuba have had a great time with us here at Asia Divers. Not only did they have fantastic weather but dive conditions have been splendid too. All our critters have been around in abundance and a couple of trips to Verde Island put the icing on the cake.So a fond farewell to you all and my we see you again in the future.

Vision Divers returns!

Welcome back to Peter and Deb Webster from Vision Divers in Melbourne, Australia. This time they brought along a group of 25. It’s been a great week of diving and hanging out with this lot…perhaps too much fun sometimes?! With perfect conditions for diving, weather, sunshine and lots of quality time in the Point, it didn’t take much to please everyone and make sure they all left with big smiles on their face. Hope to see you all back again next year!

British School Manila goes diving!

British School

What a great week it was for the 18 students and three teachers from the British School Manila. Fourteen left with their Open Water certification, Four earned their Advanced, and we even got one of the teachers to do a “Try Dive”.  eLearning once again ensured that the kids got to spend more time in the water and no time in the classroom during their stay here. They all had more time for fun diving, a sunset cruise, and a big send off party on the platform. Thank you to Will Tibblits, David O’Connor, and Alexandra Van Lierde for organizing this very successful event. We can hardly wait until next year to do it again!

Finding Nemo at Asia Divers

mazinkidOur newest bubblemaker Oscar Collin is very happy to show off his certificate with his instructor, Mazi. Asia Divers loves kids and takes special care with the little ones. We have a bubble-maker course in the swimming pool and we also do bubblemaker dives in the ocean to a depth of 2 m for kids 8-10 years old. Kids love to get the chance to find Nemo!

Medicine and fun diving go hand in hand!

Asia Divers group
A great crowd from Sweden enjoyed 10 days with us.

It was great to have Hans Ornhagen and his group of 17 doctors, intensive care nurses, and diving instructors from Sweden, here with us for ten days. Hans’s background is research and teaching in diving medicine, and for the past 10 years he has run a course in diving medicine abroad. This time he chose to do it here at El Galleon/Asia Divers.  For details see www.divemed.net. The program included evening lectures and some special exercises during the day, but there was always time for lots of fun diving for the whole group. They even had an afternoon field trip to see the recompression chamber in Batangas. Contact us or Hans if you would like to join him next year perhaps.
