Springboard Foundation Annual Back to School Pencil Drive

may17d5

It is that time of year again for the annual Back to School Pencil Drive. The start of the school year can be an expensive time for parents. Springboard Foundation helps families from poor backgrounds by providing school supplies. Last year we helped over 3000 students from struggling families across the Philippines and this year we are aiming to help 5000! To donate to this very worthy cause please use this link: http://springboard-foundation.org/back-to-school-pencil-drive-2017/

Welcome to Ron Lucas, from Bermuda

may17d11

It’s been very nice to get to know Ron Lucas who’s been here with us for a few days after he completed a photo workshop in Anilao. I think Ron is our first visitor from Bermuda!

“I came to Anilao to participate in a Macro Photography workshop at Crystal Blue and then came over to PG and EG to have 4 days of general diving with an emphasis on Coral Reefs. I particularly like the Verde Island and reef dive sites.  I did 38 dives over 14 days. This is my third trip to Philippines and I really enjoy the diving and the people here. I think the boat crews and instructors/ divemasters are great and when I had equipment issues including a broken mask these were quickly sorted out with the minimum of fuss.

I have been married to Lorraine a Born Bermudian for almost 48 years, have 2 children and 5 grandchildren and am myself an adopted Bermudian. We have lived continuously in Bermuda since 1980 although we also spend a little time in Toronto Canada.

I have been privileged to contribute photographs to marine experts for educational, research and related projects and have had a silver commemorative turtle coin produced based on one of my photos to celebrate 40 years of the Bermuda Turtle Conservation Project as well as having a first day cover (stamps) produced featuring 6 of my Bermuda Fish Images

I have a photo website at www.ronlucasphoto.smugmug.com and have produced many underwater photo books for various destinations available at cost from Blurb.com. You may also download free ebooks for the Philippines and Indonesia for the iPad from this site.

I have realized that in addition to having had a fantastic life I have also been extremely privileged to travel and photograph in wonderful exotic destinations worldwide and I hope to continue doing this as long as my health holds up. Underwater Photography is my passion and a way of sharing the wonders of our coral reefs with others. “

SeaLifeBase

aug16b10This blog is about interesting sea life that has been sent to us by SeaLifeBase. The one is about “Ocean Giants: Giant Squid”.

Last time we talked about the Kraken, that it’s a squid-like sea monster and that its identity can be either of the two known largest extant squids. First was the heaviest, the colossal squid Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni. The second is the longest, the giant squid Architeuthis dux with a cosmopolitan distribution. To read more, please see: http://sealifebaseproject.blogspot.com/2015/05/ocean-giants-giant-squid.html
You can become a SeaLifeBase collaborator. WHAT is a “SeaLifeBase collaborator,” and WHO can be one? In a nutshell, SeaLifeBase collaborators are the people who help us by: a) sending or alerting us to references and photos, which we have not yet used; b) assembling data from published sources using a preformatted template; and/or c) verifying or correcting data that we have extracted and incorporated into the information system.  Some of them are — but not limited to — biologists, taxonomists, scientists, and other experts.  Some are aquarists, photographers, businessmen, and marine-life enthusiasts.  Truly, we welcome contributions from anybody who has a passion for marine life.

Verde Island project

jul16c3Last week we had 9 painters go over to Verdi Islands’ San Agapito Elementary school to paint the roofs green in a charity ride sponsored by the Perth Australia Rotary club Subiaco – District 9455 president Geoff Down and co-organized by El Galleon. It was to have been a ten day job, but after hiring three more guys over at Verdi and with the kind donation from Rene Sten of the amazing corrugated roofing paint rollers, it took just three days! Riza Ebora headmaster was so thankful and surprised with the job, she took loads of photos and sent them with lots of thanks. Next week we are sending twenty orbital fans along with a real electrician to install two fans in each of the classrooms and admin office. We would like to take this moment to thank the Subiaco Rotary and in particular Geoff Down and our own Paul Jones for their help in making this happen.

Outreach in San Ignacio, Baco

jan16d13

El Galleon and Asia Divers were out there again this week. This time we were in Baco where we had 320 families turn up.jan16d12 jan16d14

With the money we raised for Mohawkvember and a few other donations from some generous friends of Asia Divers we managed to get an array of food items to be handed out. The organization was fantastic with the staff at El Galleon working hard to bag the food for each family and the organizers in Baco making sure that no one was left out.

Without these dedicated people none of this would be possible. They are the ones that make your donations count. We thank everyone for all of their support.
