Shanghai American School students ‘Dive against Debris’ and news from Asia Divers

Shanghai American School students Dive against Debris

We’ve had two amazing groups with us this week at Asia Divers: Maine Maritime Academy and Shanghai American School!

Farewell to the Maine Maritime Academy group. This group of 20 has enjoyed their tropical water diving experience for sure. Every dive was a feast for the eyes for them to be seeing the amazing biodiversity of Puerto Galera.

Thanks to Alan Verde, Tim Schroder and our good friends from Island Dreams for making this all come together. We’ve loved diving with you guys and hope that you can come back again.

What a great few days with this group of students from Shanghai American School.

Their “Caring for Coral “ week started at Stairway Foundation in Aninuan and then the last part of their trip was dedicated to completing their PADI Open Water training dives and joining in for the Project Aware specialty, “Dive Against Debris”.

Shanghai American School asia divers puerto galera

Thanks so much to Kevin David for all the organization this took, and also to Karl Poulin and Joey Zhang for having it all run so flawlessly. This was also our first time to work with Big Blue Diving in Shanghai as they did the academic and confined water dives there. We hope to do more of this collaboration in the future with them and we’re already looking forward to seeing the Shanghai American School back again next year.

“Splash for trash!”

These we’re the results from our “Dive Against Debris” in our Project Aware, adopted dive site, Sabang Bay. Twenty four participants from the Shanghai American School plus their instructors participated. It’s amazing how much you can collect in just one dive! Along with picking up the trash on a very beautiful area some of us got to see a couple turtles and sea snake. The kids enjoyed sorting and collecting the trash and the data will be sent to Project Aware. Every small piece was counted.

A very busy dive platform!

Congratulations to everyone at the Shanghai American School. 22 PADI Open Water divers and 26 Project Aware Dive Against Debris Divers!

Let’s get to The Point!

Thresher Sharks in Puerto Galera get help from local divers

thresher sharks in Puerto Galera Asia Divers

The big excitement in Puerto Galera over the past while has been the thresher sharks. This photo is by one of our instructors, Andy Xie. He’s been able to get very close to the thresher sharks using his rebreather and if you read further down you’ll see the reason why he’s been getting so close to these magnificent creatures.

Puerto Galera has just been booming with thresher shark sightings over the past few weeks. Seems like there are six of them in the area now which is truly amazing. We sure do hope that they stick around for a while!

Maine Maritime Academy experience tropical diving for the first time

maine maritime academy puerto galera asia divers

Oh what it week it will be!! Alan Verde and Tim Schroder are here from the Maine Maritime Academy with eighteen 20+ year olds who have never done tropical diving before. Being used to cold water diving they’ve taken the plunge mostly just in shorts and T-‘s and they are all smiling about it.

So far on day two they are completely blow away from the marine biodiversity and some have already seen one of our neighborhood sharks too! We’re all looking forward to a great week with them.

What’s been happening this week at Asia Divers

Fantastic to have Edward Lin and his friends here from Taiwan (Larry, Wu, Jean, and Yang). They had an amazing few days enjoying all the awesome diving including diving with…guess what?!

Rebreather divers help tangled thresher shark in Puerto Galera

It’s been quite a week for thresher shark sightings in Puerto Galera. There have been 3-4 of them around pretty much every day now and our divers are getting some real close encounters with them. Unfortunately there is fishing line tied up around two of them. Andy Xie and Aaron Gillespie went out on their rebreathers. Check out the report from Andy below.

thresher sharks in puerto galera tangled in fishing line

Day 1: With a 120-minute bottom time, we finally gained the trust from the sharks, and the opportunities to get closer. Actually there are two sharks tangled in fishing lines. The lines cut deeply in their dorsal fins. We made two successful cuts out of three times attempts, and removed half of the lines from the shark that was in a worse situation. We will continue this action tomorrow to remove as many lines as we can. We appreciate it a lot that when Asia Divers learned about our plan, they assign us a boat free of charge, and give us many supports. Divers: Andy Xie and Aaron Gillespie.

rebreather diver helps tangled thresher shark

Day 2: It didn’t go smoothly as we expected. 120 minutes bottom time. The healthy shark came first to detect as it did yesterday. Then brought us a new friend, a thresher with a bent dorsal fin (is it an injury from badly fight or hit? See photo 7), using pectoral fins with great effort to keep balance. Three sharks came closer to us, but the two tangled didn’t show up. Is it because the temperature increased by 1℃ or they are afraid of seeing too many divers? We removed fishing lines at the bottom about 20m long to prevent further harms to the creatures. We will dive tomorrow as well. Wish us good luck to cut off more lines from the sharks.

Dive site of the week: Manila Channel

manila channel dive site puerto galera asia divers

Manila Channel is a great place to dive. The bottom of the channel is a covered with rocks and features small marine life. It can be lots of fun for searching for some wonderful macro creatures. Photographers love this area for the unique nudis and critters. On the right side of the channel lies a sloping reef with a mini-wall with beautiful gorgonians, sea fans, whip corals, and barrel sponges. There is also a small wreck which quite often will have a frogfish or two living on it. Keep an eye out, one time we saw 5 eagle rays passing through. You can see more of our dives sites here.

They all had enjoyed the sunny days and kept busy doing diving courses, enjoying the awesome food, card games at night, shopping ops walking past them on the beach and a very nice visit to a local school.

7 students left here as PADI Open Water divers and 9 earned their PADI AOW and one did PADI Rescue/EFR!

Everyone worked very hard and should be very proud for what they have accomplished. Even two of the teachers did their Nitrox course this week.

Thanks to Daniel Gamwell who organized everything over the past year to make this happen and to Daniel, Sian and Nathan for keeping things smoothly running while they were here. It sure makes our job easy!
